How to Keeep Safe from Cell Phone Radiation

Cell phones emit high levels of radio-frequency EMF, especially when you use the phone to talk, text, or access the internet. Even when you are not using the phone, it still emits radiation periodically as it keeps itself in touch with the nearest cell tower. These facts are not in doubt.

So is safe cell phone usage even possible? Sure. It just depends on how you use it!

The most dangerous way to use a cell phone that emits high-energy radio-frequency radiation is to hold it right next to your most important body part for long periods. Well, actually I meant your head!

Any alternative is better than that.

Here are some basic guidelines for safe cell phone use. You may have heard them before!

Basic habits to minimize cell phone radiation

  • Whenever you have a choice, use a regular corded phone (landline).
  • Send and receive text messages in preference to making cell phone calls.
  • Avoid calling someone on their cell phone if you can contact them on a landline instead.
  • When you must call on a cell phone, keep the conversation short.

That wasn’t too bad, was it? Maybe you thought I was going to suggest


  • Keep your phone switched off most of the time. Switch on to collect messages and respond.

Actually, if you can handle it, this last one is a really good way to reduce mobile phone radiation. Most people can apply this at certain times of the day, or of the week. But at other times it may not be practical. So do this if you can, when you can. But when you can’t, there are other options.

Let’s look at them.

How to TALK SAFELY on your mobile phone

An air tube headset has only air tube connections to the earpiece, not wires.  (It works like a stethoscope). The mobile phone still emits radiation but you can hold it quite far away from your body while you use it.

With a normal wired headset, the headset wires act as an aerial, conducting some of the radiation from the phone to your ear (and brain). So this is not the best solution (though it is still much better than placing the phone right next to your head).

However, there is a way you can turn this method into a very good solution. That is by fixing a so-called ferrite bead to the outside of the headset wire. The ferrite bead selectively stops radio-frequencies from travelling up the headset wire, while allowing the (electrical) sound signals to pass through.

Use a bluetooth headsetBluetooth headsets may be better than wired headsets not equipped with a ferrite bead, and are also much better than placing the phone next to your ear.

Although a bluetooth headset emits radiation, it is much weaker than your cell phone (the signal only has to reach your cell phone, not the cell tower).

The advantages of a bluetooth headset are that there are no wires to fumble with, and you can have the cell phone placed completely out of reach.

There are some quite decent units. (You will want one with a microphone, and a volume control.)

All of these measures rely on the fact that you are able to keep the phone a long way from your body while you use it. So you need to make sure you do that — 12 inches is enough to reduce the EMF by about 150 times.

Another alternative is to use the speaker-phone facility, if you have one. Then you can hold the phone several inches away from your ear. This can reduce the cell phone radiation strength at your ear by 20 to 60 times!

The main disadvantage is that your conversation may not be private. But also, if you or the other party have trouble hearing, you will probably bring the phone close to your head again. The big advantage is that no additional equipment is required.

If you can’t avoid having a long conversation with a mobile phone next to your ear, it may help to switch ears every two or three minutes. This is not recommended as a strategy for safe cell phone usage, just as an emergency measure.

  • Children under 10 should never use a cell phone except in an emergency, and when there is NO alternative.
  • Children are much more vulnerable to cell phone EMF than adults, due to their smaller heads, thinner skulls and undeveloped brains
  • For the same reason, discourage small children from placing their ear next to your cell phone while you are using it.
  • Older children or teenagers should avoid chatting on cell phones. Teach them about cell phone radiation, and motivate them to use cell phones for urgent communication only.
  • Messaging, in reasonable amounts (minutes, not hours) is preferable to talking.
  • Some children cannot restrict their use of a cell phone. Then as parents, we may have to be creative! It is important that we find some way to limit our children’s cell phone usage, for their own protection.
  • Children should also have an air tube headset, and use it whenever possible.

Carrying your cell phone safely

  • When you are carrying a cell phone, keep it as far away from you as possible. Handbags and briefcases are better than pockets — especially if you don’t rest them on your lap.
  • If you do carry a phone in your pocket, first switch it off (or to flight mode — see below). Take it out of your pocket when you arrive at a place where you can safely put it down (e.g. your home) switch it back on, and check for messages.
  • Don’t sleep with your mobile phone! Keep it well away from the bed (more than 6 feet), or in flight mode, or switched off. If charging the phone, don’t have the phone or it’s charger within 3 feet of any person. And don’t allow any children in your house to sleep with their mobile phones under their pillow, or close to them (or anyone else).
  • Night time is a wonderful opportunity to allow your body to repair any damage caused by radiation exposure during the day. Don’t waste it.

Although I know not to keep my cellphone in my pocket, somehow it always ends up there! I am now using an anti-radiation cellphone pouch, which has screening material on one side (or optionally, both sides). With the phone inside, I can put it in my pocket with the protected side towards my body, and the unprotected side facing outwards.

The phone is still able to communicate with the tower, so it works normally, but I am protected from most of the radiation. To make or answer calls, I first slip it out from the pouch. Rather neat, and inexpensive from Amazon.

Flight Mode, Airplane Mode, Standalone Mode, Offline Mode

These terms all mean the same. When switched to this mode, the phone will not attempt to make contact with a cellular network, wi-fi network or Bluetooth device.

Switching the phone to flight mode should be as good as switching the phone off (except that it may still produce low-frequency EMF if you are running offline apps on the phone).

You will not be able to receive calls or messages when in flight mode.

Minimise cell phone radiation while driving

  • When you drive a car, remove your mobile phone from your pocket or belt. Keep it in a secure place, out of sight, unless you are using it for navigating.
  • Don’t use your phone functions while driving, not even for texting. (O.K. that was just a joke! I am sure you would not try to text while driving.) The only exception is hands-free conversation, but even that should be kept to an absolute minimum, as it can be a dangerous distraction for the driver – much more so than talking to a passenger. (A passenger can make allowances for the driver having to concentrate on the road, especially in critical situations.)
  • Using a phone in an enclosed space such as a car (or deep within a building) causes the phone to beef up its signal strength to maintain contact with the tower. That extra EMF strength goes into you too.
  • Cell phones work hard to maintain contact with the network when you are travelling. This means more frequent communication and increased radiation.
  • Cell phone radiation bounces around inside any metal enclosure such as an automobile, increasing your exposure and that of any other passengers.  The same applies to buses and trains.
  • The best strategy is to switch off your mobile phone (or select flight mode) when you enter a vehicle, if this is practical.

Cell phone radiation is HIGH when signal strength is LOW

  • When your phone shows a low signal strength, it has to work harder. So radiation levels will be high.
  • If possible, avoid making calls when the signal strength (as shown on your phone) is low.

Low radiation cell phones

When buying a cell phone, consider the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) of your intended phone. They vary widely. There is a legal limit (1.6 watts per kg in the USA and 2.0 watts per kg in Europe). This is the maximum radiation level you can be subjected to when using your phone. Many cell phones are rated quite close to this limit, but some are rated as low as 0.5 W/kg.

However, this is a very imperfect rating system. The SAR value indicates the maximum rating of the phone. But a phone with a high SAR rating could normally operate with lower emissions than a phone with a low SAR rating. So a low SAR rated phone is not necessarily better for your health.

Don’t rely on a low-rated phone to keep you safe from radiation.

Cell phone radiation protection devices

Beware of vendors who offer weird discs, jewellery or gadgets to reduce your absorption of cell phone radiation. If they can’t demonstrate a reduced EMF effect–with an EMF meter– then there isn’t one!


Don’t fall for EMF harmonising, EMF calming, EMF resonance or any other hokum. Before you trust anything, ask to see it demonstrated using an EMF meter.
